The Foundation tackles mental health issues by supporting and promoting scientifically tested research initiatives and interventions for common mental health disorders.

We recognise that mental health is currently under-researched and seek to address this funding shortfall. Currently mental health disorders contribute 19.1% to Australia's total disease burden (being the major source of disability in Australia ahead of cardiovascular disease and cancer), but receive only 8.9% of national medical research funding.

Good quality research can make a real difference to the lives of the many Australians who are affected by mental health problems. In particular, the Foundation supports innovative, community-based mental health research which provides non-clinical, accessible support and effective 'first aid' options for common mental health disorders.

The Australian Foundation for Mental Health Research supports research conducted by the ANU Centre for Mental Health Research, the only research organisation in Australia that focuses specifically on common mental health problems in a community setting.

For more information about specific research projects, see the Centre's website: www.anu.edu.au/cmhr , or click here to view recent media releases.

In addition to funding research, the Foundation also operates to generate increased community understanding and awareness of mental health issues. This is of particular importance since currently 18% of Australian adults in any one year have one of the common mental disorders, but many of these people do not receive help.

By encouraging positive community attitudes to mental health and promoting effective, scientifically proven and accessible interventions for mental health problems, the Foundation aims to reduce stigma and increase the mental health literacy of Australians - increasing the number of people who recognise, understand and seek help for common mental health problems whilst creating a more supportive environment of increased choice and access to effective treatment and prevention options.
